Betting on September 15
AUGUST 21, 2006, ST. HELENA, CA. - Go Fish Partners Cindy Pawlcyn, Ken Tominaga and Sean Knight announced this week they are betting their ambitious re-do of the restaurant at 641 Main Street will open to the public Friday, September 15. Pawlcyn and Knight commissioned architect Howard Backen, Backen Gillam, to refashion the former Pinot Blanc as a West Coast fish house and sushi bar and signed with the Canadian-American Ledcor for the reconstruction. Backen was responsible for the redesign of Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen and is widely known for his work at Robert Redford's Sundance and Harlan Estate Vineyards.
When wine country restaurateur Cindy Pawlcyn named her soon-to-open sushi bar and classic West Coast fish house after the popular children’s card game, "Go Fish," she set the tone for the same casual good times her diners have enjoyed at her flagship restaurant Mustards over the past two decades. To wine country locals, Go Fish COO Sean Knight is a fixture on the prominent Napa Valley building site where he has been seen daily since late Spring overseeing the highly detailed renovation and landscaping effort. Ever committed to sustaining the "come-down-to-my-house-feel" of her flagship Mustards Grill in Yountville, Pawlcyn began the new look of Go Fish at the Main Street sidewalk where she’s installing a grove of apple trees and the buffalo grass she sees from the kitchen window of her nearby home.
Out back, she took advantage of the inspiration from Backen's family summer holiday in France with cream-colored awnings framing the perimeter of the popular patio. She plans to add cushy banquettes along the patio walls and install mature trees in the interior.
Inside, diners will enjoy well-placed, mahogany-framed windows, a honed Carrera sushi and raw bar and an airy Napa Valley palette of pale and royal blues, Dijon mustard and dark end-cut wood floors. A bay area artist has been asked to create tile paintings for the dining room. Much loved for her local hospitality, Pawlcyn has created a private dining area for which Christine Rizzo-Murphy has been accepting harvest and holiday season reservations for over a month.
Plates and serving dishes have been creatively sourced from local favorites like Heath Ceramics in Sausalito; Bauscher porcelain from Weiden, Germany and Sugahara glass in Japan. Ken Tominaga, whose Rohnert Park Hana Japanese Restaurant has long been a distant mecca for devoted sushi lovers, will serve as sushi master at Go Fish.

On the fish house side, Cindy Pawlcyn has made Today's Fresh Catch Your Way, the menu centerpiece giving diners the option of wood-grilled, steamed or sautéed fish with a sauce of choice, followed close behind by No Fish offering a grilled T-bone steak, corn-ricotta ravioli and citrus-marinated pork tenderloin. A deliciously homey Bowls section includes a soup of the day, Fish in Crazy Water and Classic Steamers.
San Francisco's favorite, Potato Crusted Sand Dabs, are promised along with trout made into Crispy Fish Sticks for the young at heart. True to the comfort food her reputation is founded on, Cindy's given her menu a sandwich section that runs from Griddled Crab Cake on brioche to Dorothy Jane's ("Mom," to Cindy) Tuna Melt.
Go Fish will be open seven days a week 11:30 a.m.– 9:30 p.m. at 641 Main Street just south of Taylor's Refresher Stand. Reservations may be made by calling 707-963-0700 or through Open Table.
